New Delhi: In a major policy relief for tech platforms, the Government of India has extended the deadline for implementing the SIM-binding rule for popular messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal till December 31. The decision comes after companies sought additional time to adapt their systems to the new regulatory requirements.
The rule mandates that messaging apps will function only if the registered SIM card is active and present in the user’s device, ensuring a tighter link between identity and usage. The Department of Telecommunications India has also relaxed the earlier six-hour compulsory logout rule for web versions, shifting instead to AI-based risk assessment for session control. Aimed at curbing rising cyber frauds, including “digital arrest” scams, the move is expected to significantly strengthen user verification and enhance digital security across platforms.
