Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has begun casting its verdict today in a high-stakes battle that will shape the state’s political future. Voting is underway to elect 140 members to the 16th Legislative Assembly, with enthusiasm running high across polling stations.
A total of 883 candidates are contesting, making it a fiercely competitive election. Polling started at 7 AM and will continue until 6 PM, with millions of voters expected to exercise their democratic right.
The state boasts an electorate of over 27.1 million, including nearly 54,000 service voters. To ensure a smooth voting process, authorities have set up 30,495 polling booths, including 24 auxiliary stations. All preparations, including the distribution of polling materials, were completed well in advance.
Security has been significantly tightened, especially in the 2,040 sensitive booths identified across the state. Around 1.46 lakh polling personnel have been deployed, while more than 76,000 police officers are on duty to maintain peace and order. The police force has been strategically organized into 154 election subdivisions under district leadership to ensure seamless monitoring.
Politically, the election is seen as a decisive contest. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is aiming for a historic continuation in power, banking on its decade-long governance record. The opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), however, is confident that anti-incumbency sentiments will drive a shift in power. Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is looking to expand its footprint and make significant gains.
As Kerala votes today, all eyes are on the final outcome that will define the state’s next chapter.
