Kochi: India’s marine fish production recorded a 3 per cent increase in 2025, reflecting a positive trend in the country’s fisheries sector, according to the latest assessment by the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).
The report revealed that Tamil Nadu emerged as the country’s leading marine fish-producing state, contributing the highest share to the national catch. Meanwhile, Kerala registered a 2 per cent growth in marine fish landings compared to the previous year, maintaining its strong position in the sector.
CMFRI officials said the increase in marine fish production was driven by improved fishing activity, favourable weather conditions in several coastal regions, and better resource management practices. The findings are based on nationwide marine fish landing data collected from major fishing harbours and coastal centres.
The report highlighted that India’s fisheries sector continues to play a crucial role in supporting coastal livelihoods, food security, and export earnings. Kerala, known for its vibrant fishing industry, remained one of the country’s major contributors despite facing challenges such as fluctuating fuel prices and climate-related changes in marine ecosystems.
Experts noted that sustainable fishing practices and scientific monitoring will be essential to maintain long-term growth in marine fish production. CMFRI also stressed the need for conservation measures to protect marine biodiversity while ensuring stable income for fishing communities.
The fisheries sector is considered a key pillar of India’s blue economy, with coastal states increasingly focusing on modernisation, infrastructure development, and sustainable harvesting methods to boost productivity.
