Thiruvananthapuram: As two high-profile cases—the long-pending SNC-Lavalin case and the Exalogic–CMRL financial transactions case—move through crucial legal stages, Kerala’s political landscape is once again witnessing intense debate over Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s legal and political future.
The SNC-Lavalin case, which has remained pending before the Supreme Court for several years, concerns the CBI’s appeal against the Kerala High Court’s decision discharging Pinarayi Vijayan from the case. The matter has reportedly been listed before the Supreme Court numerous times without reaching a final hearing, a point frequently highlighted by opposition parties.
Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) investigation into the Exalogic–CMRL financial transactions has reportedly entered a new phase. The case gained national attention following findings by the Income Tax Settlement Commission regarding payments made by CMRL to Exalogic Solutions Pvt. Ltd., allegedly without corresponding services being rendered. Investigators are examining the nature and purpose of these financial transactions.
According to reports, the ED is re-examining statements previously recorded from Veena Vijayan, along with the deposition of CMRL Managing Director Sasidharan Kartha and the company’s financial records. Investigators are also said to be analysing alleged inconsistencies between documentary evidence and witness statements, although no official details have been released.
Political circles are also discussing the possibility of investigators comparing the statements of Pinarayi Vijayan, Veena Vijayan, and Sasidharan Kartha as part of the ongoing probe. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding any such move.
Speculation has also emerged over whether Veena Vijayan could turn an approver in the case. At present, however, no official indication supports such claims. Under Indian law, granting approver status requires a specific legal process and judicial approval, making current discussions largely speculative.
Observers believe that Sasidharan Kartha’s testimony could prove significant in determining the direction of the investigation. Investigating agencies are reportedly focusing on the contractual arrangements, the nature of the payments made to Exalogic, and whether services corresponding to those payments were actually delivered.
The CPI(M), on the other hand, has consistently alleged that central investigative agencies are being used for political purposes. The party maintains that the investigations are politically motivated, while investigative agencies have indicated that the probe is based on financial records, banking transactions, and documentary evidence.
As the Supreme Court proceedings in the SNC-Lavalin case continue alongside the ED’s investigation into the Exalogic–CMRL transactions, both developments are expected to remain at the centre of Kerala’s political discourse in the coming months.
The final legal position will ultimately depend on the findings of the investigating agencies and the decisions of the courts. Until then, the controversies surrounding both the SNC-Lavalin and Exalogic cases are likely to remain a major political issue in the state.
