New Delhi: In a remarkable and rare show of consensus, Harivansh Narayan Singh has been re-elected unopposed as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha—marking his third consecutive term in the prestigious post.
First elected in 2018, Harivansh continues to command broad support across party lines. His re-election is especially historic, as he becomes the first nominated member ever to hold the Deputy Chairman position in the Upper House.
The proposal for his reappointment was moved by Union Minister and Leader of the House J. P. Nadda and was passed without opposition, reflecting strong confidence in his leadership.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Harivansh’s experience and contributions, stating that his continued role would strengthen the functioning of the Rajya Sabha. Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge also extended warm congratulations.
A former journalist turned politician, Harivansh has built a reputation for his balanced and effective handling of parliamentary proceedings.
The position had remained vacant since April 9 after the completion of his previous term, making his swift and unanimous re-election a significant moment in parliamentary affairs.
