New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Thursday rejected a no-confidence motion moved by the opposition against Speaker Om Birla, following intense debate and dramatic scenes inside the House. The motion was ultimately defeated through a voice vote amid loud protests from opposition members.
The discussion on the motion was initiated by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who clarified that the move was not a personal attack on Om Birla but an attempt to protect the dignity and impartial functioning of Parliament.
During the debate, Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the Speaker, stating that the Speaker serves as a neutral guardian of the House and represents both the ruling party and the opposition equally.
However, the debate quickly escalated when Shah and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi engaged in a sharp verbal exchange. Shah’s remarks mocking Rahul Gandhi’s conduct triggered strong reactions from opposition members, who accused him of using unparliamentary language.
Opposition MPs stormed the well of the House and raised slogans in protest. Amid the uproar and heated exchanges, the motion was put to a voice vote and rejected, allowing Om Birla to continue as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
