Thrissur: The future of this year’s Thrissur Pooram hangs in the balance as a crucial high-level meeting is set for today at the Collectorate. Ministers, along with representatives of Paramekkavu Devaswom and Thiruvambady Devaswom, will decide how the grand festival should proceed in the wake of a tragic explosion.
In a significant move, both temple authorities have proposed conducting the festival without fireworks, focusing instead on preserving its rich traditions. Iconic rituals like the Kudamattam (umbrella exchange) are expected to go ahead as per custom.
The proposal comes amid strong public sentiment to not cancel the festival entirely, especially after months of elaborate preparations. G Rajesh stated that the aim is to uphold the cultural and ritualistic essence of the celebration.
Meanwhile, Thiruvambady Devaswom has suggested observing mourning until the 24th before holding the festival in a traditional manner. Both Devaswoms have made it clear they will abide by whatever decision emerges from today’s meeting.
The urgency of the decision follows the devastating blast at a fireworks unit in Mundathikode, where materials for the festival were being prepared. The explosion claimed 14 lives and left 12 others seriously injured, now undergoing treatment at a government medical college hospital.
With emotions running high and safety concerns paramount, all eyes are now on today’s meeting to determine how one of Kerala’s most celebrated festivals will unfold this year.
