Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is experiencing intense summer heat during the day, while relief may arrive in the form of thunderstorms and lightning by evening, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The weather department has warned that isolated parts of the state could witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning today, urging the public to stay alert as lightning poses serious risks.
Even as some regions in southern Kerala received summer showers yesterday, the sweltering heat continues to grip the state. A heat alert has been issued in 12 districts, with temperatures soaring well above normal levels.
Palakkad is expected to record a high of 39°C, followed by Kollam at 38°C. Several districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Thrissur may see temperatures climb up to 37°C, while Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod could touch 36°C.
The IMD has also warned that the combined effect of high temperature and humidity may make conditions feel 2–3°C hotter than usual, leading to widespread discomfort, especially in lowland areas.
Residents are strongly advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and take necessary precautions against lightning as Kerala braces for a mix of extreme heat and sudden storms.
