Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is witnessing an unexpected surge in temperatures as intense dust storms from northern regions grip the state, despite La Niña’s usual cooling influence.
Meteorologists report that strong winds are carrying dust from North India and neighboring areas, creating hazy conditions and pushing temperatures above normal levels. Districts like Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad, and Kozhikode are among the worst affected, sparking concerns over an extreme summer ahead.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned that these dust storms could worsen air quality and prolong heat stress. Authorities advise residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and take precautions against respiratory issues caused by rising dust levels.
While La Niña is typically linked to cooler and wetter weather, experts suggest that shifting atmospheric patterns and global climate changes are overriding its effects, leading to Kerala’s unexpected temperature spike.
