Kerala Transport Minister Proposes Fine for Pedestrians Using Mobile Phones

K B Ganesh Kumar In Assembly

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar has proposed imposing a fine on pedestrians who use mobile phones while crossing roads. He believes that such a measure will help reduce accidents caused by inattentive walking.

Speaking in the state assembly, the minister highlighted that many pedestrians cross roads while talking on their phones, unaware of oncoming vehicles. This negligence, he said, leads to accidents that could be avoided with stricter regulations.

Currently, traffic fines are imposed only on vehicle users for violations. The minister suggested that pedestrians should also be held accountable for reckless road behavior. “Introducing fines for those who cross roads while using mobile phones will enhance road safety and bring more discipline among pedestrians,” he stated.

Ganesh Kumar urged the police department to take necessary steps and emphasized the need for legal amendments to implement this rule effectively. The proposal has sparked discussions on road safety and pedestrian responsibility in Kerala.
