Dr. Rajeev Menon, National Organizational General Secretary of the Republican Party, has called for the Central Government to intervene in the Mullaperiyar issue. After a brief hiatus, the Mullaperiyar topic has once again become a subject of discussion on social media. The fear that the dam might burst is causing widespread panic among the people. The Central Government should step in to resolve the issues between Tamil Nadu and Kerala concerning the Mullaperiyar dam. The Centre can exert significant influence in resolving the issue. Dr. Rajeev Menon emphasized that the Central Government should urgently take steps to build a new dam through discussions with both states and reaching a consensus. He added that if any unfortunate incident occurs, it could lead to a disaster capable of altering the very fabric of Kerala. Therefore, the Central Government should take immediate steps to construct a new dam to save Kerala from a major disaster.
Mullaperiyar is one of the oldest dams in India, which is what concerns Kerala. Every time the dam reaches its maximum storage capacity, Kerala is haunted by the fear of its potential bursting, Dr. Rajeev Menon explained. Mullaperiyar is considered one of the six most dangerous dams in the world. The dam, originally designed with a lifespan of only fifty years, is still operational, which is why the issue remains under discussion. Reports suggest that the Mullaperiyar dam has structural weaknesses. The matters discussed in the UN report are not based on new studies but are derived from previous studies and related references. Although the dam was initially expected to have a lifespan of fifty years, it is still functioning today. There are structural problems with the dam, leading to fears that it could break. With such a threat looming, the people are increasingly anxious, Dr. Rajeev Menon noted.’
