Bengaluru: The excitement of the Indian Premier League kicks off today as defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Chinnaswamy Stadium from 7:30 PM. The much-awaited clash marks the start of another thrilling season of cricket, with fans able to watch the action live on Star Sports and via the JioHotstar app.
However, unlike previous years, the tournament will begin without its traditional grand opening ceremony. While such events have long been a signature of the IPL, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to skip it this time. The move comes as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives during a tragic stampede at last season’s victory celebrations involving Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Reports suggest that instead of an opening show, a closing ceremony is being planned. Over its 18-year history, IPL has previously cancelled opening ceremonies on a few occasions due to national tragedies, security concerns, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
