Dr. Rajeev Menon, Secretary-General of the Republican Party of India (RPI), has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging a nationwide ban on commercial passenger aircraft over 10 years old. Citing safety concerns, environmental impact, and declining passenger comfort, Dr. Menon emphasized that aging aircraft pose significant risks due to outdated technology and higher maintenance demands.
Dr Rajeev Menon called on the Ministry of Civil Aviation to create a phased retirement policy, incentivize airlines to upgrade fleets, and align India’s aviation sector with global safety and sustainability standards. The proposal, which could reshape airline operations and boost demand for newer aircraft, is under review by government officials. While welcomed by safety advocates, the suggestion has also sparked debate over its potential impact on fares and smaller carriers. If adopted, the move could mark a transformative shift toward safer and greener skies in India.
