Arun Karanavar is the son of the late Vimala Karanavar, a well-known Congress leader and one of the prominent women political figures from Haripad. She played an important role in strengthening the Congress organisation in the region and was widely respected for her accessibility, humility, and close association with party workers and the public. Her untimely demise following a brief illness was widely mourned. His father is Radhakrishna Karanavar.
