Kerala Enforces Power Cuts Amid Heatwave Surge; SMS Alerts to Keep Consumers Informed

Electricity

Thiruvananthapuram: Facing an unprecedented spike in electricity demand due to intense summer heat, the Kerala State Electricity Board has rolled out Peak Load Management measures across the state, introducing short, scheduled power cuts to stabilize the grid.
The temporary outages—ranging from 15 to 30 minutes—will be implemented based on regional demand and consumption patterns. To minimize inconvenience, consumers will receive advance notifications via SMS, ensuring they stay prepared.
Power usage in Kerala has soared dramatically, particularly during peak evening hours between 6 PM and 11 PM. According to KSEB, the surge is pushing the system to its limits, raising concerns of potential grid failures if immediate steps are not taken.
In response, authorities are urging residents to actively support conservation efforts. High-energy appliances such as induction stoves, water heaters, irons, washing machines, and pump sets should be avoided during peak hours. Electric vehicle charging is also discouraged in the evening.
Simple steps can make a big difference—keeping air conditioners set between 24°C and 26°C, and turning off unnecessary lights and devices can significantly reduce the load.
With collective effort, KSEB aims to navigate the crisis efficiently while ensuring a steady and reliable power supply across Kerala.
