Kerala Schools Set for New Academic Year: Admissions Open May 2, Classes Begin June 1

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is gearing up for the 2026–27 academic year, with admissions to all classes in state syllabus schools starting from May 2. The new school year will officially begin on June 1 with a vibrant Praveshanotsavam (welcome ceremony) across the state.

In a key update, while the Right to Education Act mandates a minimum age of six for Class 1 admission, Kerala will continue its relaxed norm under the Kerala Education Rules, allowing children aged five to enroll for the upcoming academic year as well.

The General Education Department has emphasized that every child seeking admission must be accommodated in public schools. Students without necessary documents can be granted temporary admission, ensuring no child is left behind. Notably, entrance tests are strictly prohibited for school admissions.

Adding to the relief for parents, students from Classes 1 to 8 will receive free textbooks and uniforms. Schools have been directed to complete all maintenance works by May 30 and secure a fitness certificate from local authorities before reopening.

Promotion lists, including those under special learning support programs, will also be published on May 2.

With inclusive policies and early preparations, Kerala is all set to welcome students into a fresh academic year with renewed energy and opportunity.
