Kerala Heatwave Crisis: Palakkad Shuts Down Classrooms, Orders Immediate Shift to Online Learning

Temperature

Palakkad: Facing an intense heatwave, authorities in Palakkad have ordered the suspension of all physical classes in schools, colleges—including professional and technical institutions—and coaching centres from April 20, prioritizing student safety amid soaring temperatures. The directive, issued by the District Disaster Management Authority, mandates that institutions transition to online classes within 24 hours, ensuring uninterrupted learning through platforms like Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom.

The move comes as temperatures in the district have climbed to 40.1°C, with a “feels like” temperature touching 45°C, coupled with a high UV index, significantly raising the risk of heatstroke and dehydration. Officials cited poor classroom ventilation and the likelihood of continued high temperatures as key reasons behind the decision. The order will remain in force until the temperature drops to 37°C or below for two consecutive days.

While regular classes are halted, exams and essential practical sessions may continue under strict safety measures, including adequate ventilation, drinking water, ORS availability, and limited duration. Activities that cannot be conducted online, such as lab or clinical exams, must be held in small batches with proper precautions.

Authorities have also urged the public to avoid outdoor exposure between 10 AM and 4 PM, stay well-hydrated, and ensure proper facilities in hostels and residential institutions. Violations of the directive can be reported via helpline 1077, with strict action to be taken under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

Bottom line: As extreme heat grips the region, Palakkad’s swift move underscores the urgency of protecting students while keeping education on track.
