Maundy Thursday 2026: Faithful Relive the Spirit of Humility and Sacrifice

Pesaha

Kochi: Devotees across the region are solemnly observing Maundy Thursday, commemorating the final meal shared by Jesus Christ with his 12 disciples.

Marking the fifth day of Holy Week—beginning with Palm Sunday—this sacred occasion falls in the concluding phase of the 50-day Lent. Churches are filled with special prayers and deeply symbolic rituals that reflect the essence of faith, love, and humility.

A key highlight of the day is the traditional “washing of the feet” ceremony, inspired by Christ’s act of washing the feet of his disciples during the Last Supper. In churches, priests reenact this gesture by washing the feet of 12 chosen individuals, reminding believers of the values of selfless service and compassion.

The observance sets a reflective tone for Good Friday tomorrow, when Christians will remember the crucifixion and ultimate sacrifice of Christ.
