Thiruvananthapuram: A brief spell of relief from the scorching heat may arrive in parts of Kerala today, as the India Meteorological Department has predicted light rain in isolated areas across the state. Districts such as Idukki, Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Kozhikode are likely to experience brief showers. Despite the possibility of rain, temperatures remain high across the state, prompting authorities to urge residents to stay cautious.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has issued a public advisory warning that extreme heat can cause serious health problems such as heatstroke, sunburn and dehydration. People are advised to avoid direct sunlight between 11 AM and 3 PM, drink plenty of clean water even if they do not feel thirsty, and avoid beverages that may cause dehydration such as alcohol, coffee, tea and carbonated drinks during the daytime.

Officials also recommend wearing loose, light-coloured cotton clothing, using umbrellas or hats when going outdoors, and consuming plenty of fruits, vegetables and fluids like ORS. Due to the intense heat, the risk of fire outbreaks in markets, buildings and waste dumping yards may increase, and residents and institutions in such areas have been urged to remain alert.

Educational institutions have been asked to ensure adequate drinking water and proper ventilation in classrooms and examination halls. Schools are also advised to avoid outdoor assemblies or activities that expose children to direct sunlight during peak heat hours. Special care is recommended for elderly people, bedridden patients, pregnant women, children and persons with disabilities, while companies employing outdoor workers such as food delivery personnel have been asked to ensure their safety during the hottest part of the day. Anyone experiencing heat-related discomfort should immediately rest and seek medical assistance if necessary.
