Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is bracing for a spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms over the next few days, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a fresh weather alert on Friday. The change in weather is attributed to a cyclonic circulation and a low-pressure system developing over the Indian Ocean and the southeast Bay of Bengal.
According to the IMD, isolated parts of the state could witness intense rainfall accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious amid the unstable atmospheric conditions.
Following the forecast, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has released a public advisory highlighting the dangers of lightning. The authority warned that lightning strikes can pose serious threats to human and animal life, while also damaging electrical and communication networks and household appliances.
Officials emphasized the importance of taking precautionary measures as soon as dark clouds begin to form, noting that lightning may not always be visible before it strikes. The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during thunderstorms and to seek safe shelter to minimize risk.
