Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) National General Secretary Anu Chacko has strongly criticised the BJP-led central government, stating that its efforts to undermine the employment guarantee scheme will not be accepted. Anu Chacko said the scheme, introduced during the first UPA government by former Union Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Yadav, was a transformative initiative that changed the face of rural India.
Anu Chacko was speaking after inaugurating a Christmas outreach programme for people living on the streets, organised by the Janata Labour Union (JLU) Ernakulam District Committee.
Anu Chacko described the employment guarantee scheme as far more than a welfare measure, calling it a lifeline for millions of rural families. At a time when unemployment and poverty are increasing, Anu Chacko alleged, the BJP is attempting to weaken a programme that provides dignity, livelihood and security to ordinary people. Such policies, she said, threaten the very foundation of people’s lives.
Recalling the legacy of Raghuvansh Prasad Yadav, Anu Chacko said he was a rare and humble figure in Indian politics. Even while serving as a Union Minister, he lived simply in his village home and remained closely connected with rural communities. His vision, she noted, was that development should not be limited to cities but should ensure livelihood and food security in rural households. The employment guarantee scheme was crafted in line with this inclusive vision.
The event, presided over by JLU District President Biju Therattil, also saw the distribution of food and cake to street children. District Secretary Yesudas welcomed the gathering, while RJD District Secretary Sudheer Thammanam delivered the keynote address. Several leaders, including Devi Arun, Jose Puthenvettil, Thambi, Vinod Kumar, Sudhi Aluva and Ramesh Kumar, extended their greetings, and Arul Das delivered the vote of thanks.
