Kottayam: BJP leader and former MLA P C George surrendered before the Erattupetta Magistrate Court on Monday in connection with a hate speech case. His surrender came after the Kerala High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea, paving the way for his arrest.
The Kerala Police had been actively seeking George’s custody following the court’s decision. However, instead of waiting for an arrest, the veteran politician took a dramatic turn by appearing in court on his own. His legal team, including advocate Cyril and his daughter-in-law Parvathy, accompanied him during the surrender.
Earlier, the police had reached his residence to take him into custody, but George was not present at the location. The case against him stems from a controversial remark he made during a television debate on January 5, which was deemed to incite religious hatred. Following a complaint filed by the Youth League Erattupetta Mandalam Committee, the police had registered a case.
Both the Kottayam Sessions Court and the Kerala High Court had previously denied his anticipatory bail pleas. After his surrender, the court remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.
