Kerala Pushes for Extension on Rs 529.50 Crore Loan for Wayanad Rehabilitation Amid Tight Deadlines

Wayanad

The Kerala government is set to request an extension from the Centre for the utilization of the Rs 529.50 crore loan designated for the rehabilitation of landslide-affected areas in Wayanad. With the current deadline of March 31, 2025, fast approaching, state officials are raising concerns over the feasibility of meeting the tight timeline.

Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal has criticized the loan’s stringent conditions, especially the requirement to forward funds to implementing agencies within 10 working days. This urgency is proving to be a significant hurdle for the state.

In addition to seeking more time, the Kerala government plans to request further financial assistance in the form of a central grant to ensure comprehensive rehabilitation efforts across the affected regions.

The interest-free, long-term loan for 16 critical projects in Wayanad was announced by the Centre on February 15, 2025. As the state engages with the Centre to address the challenges, officials remain committed to ensuring the successful and timely completion of these vital rehabilitation projects.
