Kochi: Veteran Malayalam actor Kaviyoor Ponnamma died at a private hospital here on Friday, hospital sources said. She was 80. With an illustrious career spanning seven decades, Ponnamma had been undergoing treatment for some time. She leaves behind a legacy of over 700 films, predominantly playing iconic mother roles. She has also won the state award four times. Kaviyoor Ponnamma, who has made her own mark in the film world for seven decades, has proved her excellence in the role of mother many times.

In 1962, he appeared in front of the camera for the first time in the film Sri Rama Pattabhishekam. In 1965, 20-year-old Ponnamma played the role of Sathyan and Madhu’s mother in the film ‘Thommante Makkal’. Ponnamma film reaches the world through drama. One of the major plays that Ponnamma was a part of in the early days was Thoppil Bhasi’s famous ‘Muladhanam’. Ponnamma, who shined in cinema for half a century, has won many achievements including four state film awards.

In 1971, 1972, 1973 consecutively and again in 1994, Kaviyoor Ponnamma won the second best actress award. He has acted in more than four hundred films. Kaviyur Ponnamma’s role as Mohanlal’s mother was a successful combo in the mother-son partnership. Kaviyoor Ponnamma has appeared on screen as the mother of Mammootty, Dileep and many other stars.
