Japan on High Alert: Massive 7.4 Earthquake Sparks Tsunami Threat

Earhquake

Tokyo: Panic gripped Japan after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the Sanriku coast, triggering widespread tremors and raising fears of a major tsunami. The quake, which originated deep in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of around 10 km, sent strong vibrations across regions, reaching as far as Tokyo.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that tsunami waves of up to three meters could hit coastal areas, with northern regions like Hokkaido and Aomori facing the highest risk. Reports indicate that the first waves have already reached parts of the coast, intensifying concerns.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi issued an urgent appeal for residents in coastal and riverside areas to evacuate immediately to higher ground or designated shelters and remain there until further notice. Authorities stressed that safety protocols must be strictly followed.

The earthquake struck at 4:53 PM local time (1:23 PM IST), prompting immediate emergency responses, including the suspension of bullet train services between Aomori and Tokyo.
