Mumbai: The golden voice of Indian music has faded into silence. Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away at the age of 92 while undergoing treatment at Breach Candy Hospital. She had been battling multiple health issues in recent months.

The nation mourns the loss of a musical icon, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several prominent figures paying heartfelt tributes to the legendary artist.

Born into a family of music legends, Asha was the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar and daughter of noted musician Deenanath Mangeshkar. She began her journey in music at a very young age and made her playback debut in 1943 with a Marathi film song.

Her career took a defining turn in 1956 with the film CID, under the music direction of O. P. Nayyar. Together, they created timeless classics that remain popular even today. Over the decades, she collaborated with legendary composers such as S. D. Burman, R. D. Burman, Naushad, Ilaiyaraaja, and A. R. Rahman.

Her iconic partnership with R. D. Burman not only redefined her musical style but also blossomed into a personal relationship, culminating in marriage. In the 1990s, when her presence in cinema had slowed, A. R. Rahman brought her back into the spotlight with the blockbuster Rangeela, introducing her voice to a new generation.

Asha Bhosle’s achievements were extraordinary. She was the first Indian singer to be nominated for a Grammy Award and was honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

With over 10,000 songs recorded in more than 20 languages, Asha Bhosle leaves behind an unmatched legacy—one that will echo through generations and remain immortal in the history of music.
