Severe Shortage of Doctors in Kerala’s Government Hospitals

Doctors

Thiruvananthapuram: Government hospitals in Kerala are facing a severe shortage of doctors, affecting healthcare services across the state. The Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) has highlighted the issue, citing figures released by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).

According to the report, as of March 2023, 5,476 posts remained vacant under the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) out of the sanctioned 49,496 positions across various categories of staff. The shortage is putting immense pressure on the existing workforce, leading to concerns about the quality of healthcare services in government hospitals.

The KGMOA has urged the government to take immediate steps to fill the vacancies and ensure that public healthcare facilities are adequately staffed. Health sector experts have also warned that the situation could worsen if urgent recruitment measures are not implemented.
