K. Muraleedharan calls it a “political gimmick”; V. Sivankutty launches sharp attack, alleging that Sreelekha “only tells lies”. Political tensions escalate in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.

Thiruvananthapuram: The proposed resignation of BJP councillor R. Sreelekha has triggered a fresh political controversy in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, with leaders of the Congress and the CPI(M) questioning the timing and motive behind her move.

Former Union Minister K. Muraleedharan described Sreelekha’s move as a political gimmick and questioned whether it was intended to exert pressure on the BJP leadership over the mayoral position.

Former Minister V. Sivankutty, meanwhile, launched a scathing attack on Sreelekha, alleging that she was a person who resorted to falsehoods.

The controversy has brought renewed attention to the internal political dynamics of the BJP-led corporation, particularly following the selection of V. V. Rajesh as Mayor.

Sreelekha had reportedly been among those expected to be considered for the mayoral post after the BJP secured control of the corporation. However, the party’s decision to appoint Rajesh had fuelled speculation about dissatisfaction within its ranks.

Sreelekha has cited personal reasons for her decision to step down. However, the timing of the announcement has prompted questions over whether the move is linked to the ongoing political developments within the party.

The controversy has also taken a new turn following reports that her resignation had not yet been formally submitted to the Corporation Secretary. BJP leaders are reportedly making efforts to persuade her to reconsider the decision.

Whether the episode remains an individual protest or develops into a larger challenge for the BJP’s administration in the corporation remains to be seen.

The developments have opened a fresh chapter in the political contest surrounding the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, with the mayoral position and party unity emerging as key points of discussion.
