Onam in California: Malayalis recreate the spirit of Kerala on American soil
California: Thousands of miles away from Kerala, the spirit of Onam came alive in all its traditional splendour at the Indian Cultural Centre in California, where Malayalis gathered to celebrate the festival with remarkable enthusiasm and a strong sense of cultural unity.
The celebrations brought together women, men and children across generations, cutting across caste, religion and social distinctions. Dressed in traditional Kerala attire, the participants transformed the venue into a vibrant reflection of their homeland. Men appeared in mundu and shirts, while women and girls adorned themselves in set sarees and other traditional attire.
The festivities featured several elements that are closely associated with the cultural identity of Kerala, including Chenda Melam, Thiruvathira, floral decorations and traditional performances. The appearance of Mahabali in traditional attire added to the festive atmosphere and evoked the enduring cultural symbolism of Onam.
A grand Kerala-style Onam Sadya, featuring a wide variety of traditional dishes and different types of payasam, was another major attraction. For the Malayali diaspora, the feast was not merely a culinary celebration but also an expression of their continuing connection with Kerala’s food traditions and cultural heritage.
The celebrations offered a striking reminder that migration does not necessarily mean a departure from one’s cultural roots. While Malayalis have made their homes thousands of miles away from Kerala, they have carried their language, traditions, food, music and festivals with them.
In that sense, the celebrations in California represented more than a festival. They demonstrated how a community can preserve and transmit its cultural identity across generations and geographical boundaries.
The participation of people from different generations also highlighted the role of Malayali cultural organisations in keeping Kerala’s traditions alive among the diaspora. The Onam celebrations at the Indian Cultural Centre also offered non-Malayali and American guests an opportunity to experience the colour, hospitality and cultural richness of Kerala.
For the Malayalis of California, Onam was not simply a celebration imported from their homeland. It was a reaffirmation of identity — a moment when Kerala came alive once again, thousands of miles away from home.
