DYFI conference play draws attention online over costumes and presentation

Thrissur: A stage play presented as part of the state conference of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) at the Regional Theatre in Thrissur has sparked discussion on social media, with the costumes and presentation of some scenes drawing particular attention.
The play, staged at Pushpan Nagar in connection with the conference, dealt with themes including criticism of the Central government and restrictions on freedom of expression. However, sections of the online discussion have focused less on the political themes of the production and more on its visual presentation.
Posts and comments circulating on social media have questioned whether the presentation was in keeping with the traditional imagery associated with Communist political and cultural programmes.
“Is this the state conference or the launch of a new dress code for revolution?” was one of the sarcastic reactions shared online.
Cultural programmes at Communist movement conferences have traditionally featured themes relating to workers’ struggles, farmers’ movements, political resistance, martyrdom and revolutionary history. The presentation at the DYFI conference, according to the online reactions, appeared to depart from some of these familiar conventions.
The episode has also generated irony around the play’s central theme of freedom of expression, with some social media users asking whether freedom of expression extends to the choice of costumes and stage presentation as well.
The debate highlights the changing nature of political communication in the social media era, where the visual elements of a public programme can sometimes attract greater attention than its underlying political message.
The reactions have emerged from across different sections of social media, including accounts sympathetic to the Congress and BJP as well as wider public forums.
For DYFI, the episode comes amid the political discussions surrounding its state conference. While the play sought to raise questions about freedom of expression and political restrictions, its presentation has itself become a subject of public commentary.
The online debate, meanwhile, has given the conference’s cultural programme an unexpected second stage — social media.
