Census

New Delhi: India is gearing up for its first-ever fully digital Census, with preparations entering the final stage, according to Registrar General and Census Commissioner Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan. The nationwide exercise will be conducted in two phases, with the first phase of field operations set to begin on April 1. This landmark initiative marks a significant transformation in how population data is collected and managed across the country.

In Kerala, the first phase will start in June, offering citizens the option of self-enumeration from June 16 to June 30, followed by door-to-door verification by officials from July 1 to July 30. The initial phase will focus on housing details such as living conditions, assets, and access to basic facilities, while the second phase will capture population data including demographics, socio-economic status, migration, and fertility trends. With 33 detailed questions and a total approved budget of ₹11,718.24 crore, the digital census aims to deliver a more accurate, transparent, and efficient snapshot of India’s population.
