Kalpetta: In a major step towards rebuilding lives shattered by the Mundakkai–Chooralmala landslide tragedy, the Kerala government will conduct the much-anticipated lottery for newly built homes today at the model township in Kalpetta. Designed to ensure complete transparency, beneficiaries themselves will select their homes through the draw process.
Families who lost both their homes and land in the disaster have been given top priority in the allocation list. Each selected family will receive a modern three-bedroom house spread across 1,000 square feet on seven cents of land. The houses are thoughtfully constructed with strong foundations that allow for the addition of a second floor in the future.
The fully developed township boasts key amenities including paved roads, a reliable drinking water supply system, an anganwadi, and a community center—offering not just shelter, but a fresh start. In the first phase of the rehabilitation project, 178 completed homes will be handed over.
The model township, developed at Elstone Estate along the Kalpetta bypass, will be officially inaugurated on February 25 by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The government aims to hand over a total of 327 houses before the arrival of the monsoon.
Calling the project a symbol of renewed hope, the Chief Minister said February 25 will mark “a new light of hope” shining across the land of Wayanad—signaling resilience, recovery, and a brighter future for the affected families.
