Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to witness a spell of strong rainfall over the weekend, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for several districts across the state. The advisory comes amid evolving weather systems over the Indian Ocean region that are expected to intensify rainfall activity.
On Saturday, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts will remain under yellow alert. The warning continues on Sunday for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki. The IMD has forecast isolated heavy showers, with rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.
Meteorologists attribute the developing weather conditions to a low-pressure area over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal. The system is likely to move west-northwestwards towards Sri Lanka and gradually weaken within the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation has formed over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal and is expected to strengthen into a low-pressure system soon. A trough extending from this system across southern Tamil Nadu and southern Kerala up to Lakshadweep is likely to enhance rainfall across the state.
With heavy showers expected in several southern districts, authorities have urged residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions, especially in areas prone to waterlogging and landslides.
