The Kozhikode District Sessions Court is set to hear the bail plea of Shimjitha Musthafa on Tuesday in connection with the suicide of U Deepak, a Govindapuram native who allegedly took his own life after being subjected to character assassination on social media.
Police are expected to place before the court the details of the custodial interrogation conducted so far. With evidence collection and other procedural steps largely completed, sources indicate that the accused may be granted bail.
While Shimjitha has publicly maintained that she stands by the sexual harassment allegations she raised against Deepak, investigators say they have not found any proof of inappropriate or abnormal behaviour in CCTV footage or in statements from other passengers who were present on the bus during the incident.
According to the remand report, the accused recorded seven video clips during the bus journey and later shared them on social media, allegedly with the intention of making the content go viral. Police have stated that none of the videos or related evidence support claims of misconduct.
The case dates back to January 16, when Shimjitha allegedly filmed Deepak during a bus ride and circulated the footage online. Following Deepak’s death by suicide, the accused went into hiding and was later arrested by police from a relative’s residence in Vadakara.
The case has triggered intense public debate on the misuse of social media, personal privacy, and the devastating impact of online allegations, even as the legal process continues.
