Golden Boy Neeraj Chopra Now an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army

New Delhi: India’s Olympic hero and javelin sensation Neeraj Chopra has added yet another remarkable honour to his name — the Indian Army has conferred upon him the title of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel, recognizing his extraordinary achievements in sports and his inspirational service to the nation.

The prestigious honour was presented by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi at a special ceremony in New Delhi. The Territorial Army bestowed the rank on Neeraj for his exceptional contribution to Indian athletics and his embodiment of discipline, dedication, and patriotism.

Commending the athlete, Rajnath Singh hailed Neeraj as a symbol of perseverance, courage, and national pride, whose success continues to inspire millions across the country. Neeraj’s proud family members were also present at the ceremony to witness the memorable moment.

Neeraj Chopra joined the Indian Army on August 26, 2016, as a Naib Subedar (Junior Commissioned Officer) and was promoted to Subedar Major in 2024.

A decorated athlete, Neeraj has already received India’s highest sporting and civilian honours — the Khel Ratna, Padma Shri, and Arjuna Award. Following his historic gold medal win at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Rajputana Rifles regiment also honoured him with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in January 2022.

With this new honorary rank, Neeraj Chopra’s journey continues to reflect not just sporting excellence, but a deep sense of national service and pride — truly making him a golden soldier of Indian sports.
