After receiving the environmental clearance from the central government, the project worth crores of rupees has been waiting for years to come true. Dr. Rajeev Menon stated that Vizhinjam, which will witness a historic moment tomorrow, is a project that could bring significant economic growth to Kerala.
Dr. Rajeev Menon said that the Vizhinjam project, which had stalled, gained momentum after Narendra Modi’s cabinet took office at the center in May 2014. The project is expected to significantly reduce the congestion at other major ports in India. Vizhinjam is a deep-water transshipment port. Currently, many ships arrive at several ports in Colombo, causing ships from ports like Kochi to wait days for cargo transfers. The arrival of Vizhinjam will alleviate these delays.
Dr. Rajeev Menon also mentioned that the port project at Vizhinjam, which many pointed out as a great potential decades ago, is becoming a reality after a decade. In 2015, the Adani Group took over the construction of the Vizhinjam port, significantly aiding the project’s speedy progress. There is no dispute that bringing Adani, who has a good relationship with the central government, into the project management has been beneficial. The Modi government at the center and Adani’s involvement in the project are what are making the Vizhinjam project a reality.
